Oh my lord. Did people seriously…?
People know what Gendry meant. I think it’s pretty straightforward. They just were enjoying the potential for shippy double meaning there.
That’s kind of how I feel about the situation. Shipping is largely about seeing what you want to see in a story, when it isn’t literal. I understand that the line is about class difference, but why should that stop me from getting excited and daydreaming about Gendry having romantic feelings? Really, if in every story we read/heard, it was only about what was obvious and literal, there’d be very little shipping in fandom.
More importantly, shipping is about having fun with one’s romantic imagination. Do we really need to be criticizing other people’s fun? I, personally, am not in fandom to be “right” about something, or more right than someone else, I’m just here to have fun, and I have fun by shipping this ship.
